Glorious sunshine, community spirit, and a picturesque setting for a Garden Party was the backdrop for Age UK Norwich's Joyful celebration on Saturday 1st of June. With over £3,100raised from the event - bringing the charity closer to its ambitious £80,000 fundraising target in honour of its 80th anniversary.
Hosted in the historic Bishop’s Gardens by the Bishop of Norwich, The Rt Revd Graham Usher, the event welcomed around 450 guests, far exceeding expectations, as residents turned out in force to enjoy a vibrant afternoon of live entertainment, local creativity, and the rare opportunity to explore one of Norwich’s most beautiful hidden gardens.
The event celebrated the past eight decades of Age UK Norwich’s service to older people in the city, with the Fine City Strummers performing beloved hits from each of the charity’s eight decades. Reflex Theatre brought poetry and music that inspired reflection and connection, while visitors engaged with interactive games, discovered the work of Age Friendly Norwich, and enjoyed a colourful showcase from the charity’s creative Arty Party group.

Volunteers kept everyone refreshed with homemade cakes and drinks – so popular that stalls completely sold out by the end of the afternoon.
“We were absolutely thrilled with the turnout and generosity,” said Dan Skipper, Chief Executive of Age UK Norwich. “It was a beautiful celebration in a very special place, and the support we received on the day brings us another step closer to our £80,000 goal. Most of all, it highlighted the strength and warmth of the Norwich community.”
Nestled in the heart of the city, the Bishop’s Gardens – with origins dating back over 900 years – provided a spectacular backdrop for the celebration. Normally closed to the public for much of the year, the gardens are lovingly maintained by skilled staff whose dedication was evident in every border and bloom.
Reflecting on the day, Megan Durrant Marketing and Communications Lead said: “It was a joy to see the gardens filled with people, music, and purpose. Support from our community is vital, and we are so delighted that the Bishop was able to host this special occasion.”
