Age UK Norwich’s Abseil Raises Over £5,000 With Octogenarians Leading the Way!

Age UK Norwich’s recent abseil challenge at The Forum has proved to be another spectacular success, raising more than £5,000 to support older people in the city. With 45 brave participants taking the plunge down the iconic Norwich landmark, the event showcased not just generosity but also the incredible spirit and courage of the city’s older residents.
Among the fearless fundraisers, an impressive 36% were aged over 50 – and three octogenarians (someone aged between 80 and 89) quite literally showed the younger generations how it’s done.
One of the day’s most talked-about “droppers” – was 86-year-old Ian Scott, who completed the 45-foot descent with a broad grin.
When asked why he decided to take on this challenge, Ian told us “I’ve had a good life up until now and I thought I’d try to help someone less fortunate than I. Though now I’m stood here at the top, I’m feeling slightly trepidatious.” Moments after reaching the ground to a round of applause, he continued “It was exhilarating, I really enjoyed it.” Watch Ian's experience on TikTok
Among the fundraisers were enthusiastic teams from Alan Boswell Group, Home Instead, and Lovell Partnerships Ltd. Their team spirit and commitment added to the vibrant energy of the day, with many pledging to take on even more challenges in the future. Getting involved in fundraising events is a fantastic way for corporate teams to support their community, boost staff morale, and demonstrate their commitment to social responsibility – all while having fun and making a meaningful difference.
Spectators at The Forum were treated to a full day of daring descents, laughter, and encouragement, with friends, family and supporters cheering from below. For many, it was more than just a fundraising event – it was a celebration of resilience, community, and the power of purpose.
Event organiser, Bethany Grimshaw of Age UK Norwich, praised everyone who took part: “We’re blown away by the enthusiasm and courage of our abseilers – especially those in their 70s and 80s, who’ve inspired us all. This fundraiser will directly support local services that help older people live well and stay connected, and every pound raised will make a real difference.”
The £5,000 raised will now be added to Age UK Norwich’s 80th birthday fundraising goal – an ambitious campaign to raise £80,000 by the end of 2025 to mark eight decades of supporting older people in the city.
