First Day Triumph as Age UK Norwich Launches Groundbreaking Exhibition

Published on 05 August 2025 03:50 PM

Age UK Norwich proudly launched its landmark exhibition 80 Years in the Making, commemorating eight decades of unwavering support for older people in the city. The launch event took place at The Forum, where attendees gathered to reflect on the charity’s remarkable legacy and its ongoing commitment to creating an age friendly Norwich.

The exhibition, which opened to the public on 4th of August attracted an impressive turnout of visitors during the launch event alone. Guests were treated to a vibrant and moving journey through the organisation’s history, showcasing rarely seen photographs, personal stories from Norwich residents, and the evolution of support services for older people since Age UK Norwich’s founding in 1945.

A Groundbreaking Community Achievement

80 Years in the Making is a truly groundbreaking achievement not only in its scale and ambition, but in how it brings together the heart of the community. Unlike anything typically undertaken by a charity, this exhibition represents a collaborative triumph involving local groups, creative professionals, and generous businesses from across the city.

Paul Farmer Age UK CEO said of the event “it’s fantastic, what an achievement and opportunity to showcase Age UK Norwich’s work to the wider community they support”

The exhibition was designed and brought to life by Image Experiential, whose creative direction transformed archival content and community stories into an immersive and emotionally resonant experience. Their vision set the tone for an exhibition that challenges expectations of what a local charity can achieve.

This project would not have been possible without the generous support of our sponsors: AvivaHome Instead, and Hatch Brenner Solicitors, all of whom have deep roots in Norwich and a shared commitment to supporting older communities.

we could not have done this without our corporate partners and sponsors, so often charities are looking for ways to creatively celebrate what they do and encourage much needed fundraising, and to be able to put on an event like this truly is a once in a lifetime opportunity for the charity.” Said Megan Durrant, Marketing and Communications Lead

We were also honoured to welcome representatives from Age UK’s national team, including their Chief Executive Officer, who joined the launch event to mark the occasion and speak to the charity’s legacy and impact.

Further highlights included an appearance by Dr Diana Hodgins MBE, CEO of GaitSmart, whose pioneering work in mobility and wellbeing for older people continues to break new ground. Contributions from the Centre for Ageing Better added depth and national context to the exhibition’s core themes.

More Than a Display: A Hub of Activities and Advice

Beyond its historical storytelling, the exhibition offers a wide variety of engaging, informative, and inclusive activities for all ages. Visitors can enjoy interactive exhibits and creative sessions suitable for children and families, receive health coaching support focused on wellbeing and ageing well, and access expert advice on a range of later life topics including care, benefits, housing, and future planning. Throughout the space, Age Friendly Norwich feedback stations invite the public to share ideas and shape the future of their city. The exhibition also features a vast array of talks led by professionals, researchers, and community voices, all designed to spark discussion and deepen understanding. Many of these events and services are free and specifically tailored for those aged 50 and over, making this an accessible and enriching experience for all.

“the exhibition looks back, but also creates a powerful message for the future, spuring on conversations that we need to have as a community and a country on how we can improve the way we age. Ageing is a privilege and so often people go into their later years with trepidation, we as a charity are aiming to challenge that” Said Dan Skipper CEO of Age UK Norwich.

Raising £80,000 for 80 Years of Impact

As part of its 80th anniversary, Age UK Norwich has set a bold target to raise £80,000 to support and expand its vital services. Already, more than £54,000 has been raised thanks to the generosity of local businesses, residents, and donors.

This funding is essential to sustaining and growing our work — from befriending services and dementia support to outreach groups, one to one advice, and wellbeing programmes that combat loneliness and promote independence.

A Legacy of Care and a Call to Action

Awareness events like 80 Years in the Making do not just look back — they look forward. They connect people across generations, foster empathy and shared purpose, and ensure that care, love, and respect for older people remain at the heart of our city’s identity.

These are the moments that build movements. Through shared stories and open dialogue, we ensure that the voices, needs, and contributions of older people are not just remembered, but prioritised for generations to come.

Experience the Exhibition: Free and Open to All

80 Years in the Making is free to attend and open until Thursday 7th August, offering a rare opportunity to experience the living history of Norwich’s older residents and support a local cause that continues to change lives every day.

Whether you have a personal connection to Age UK Norwich, an interest in community heritage, or simply wish to celebrate the achievements and contributions of older people, this is an experience not to be missed.
