Free Electric Blanket Testing Events This October

Published on 02 October 2025 11:47 AM

As the colder months draw in, many of us turn to electric blankets and heaters to keep warm without turning up the thermostat. While these can be a cost-effective way to stay cosy, it’s important to remember that electric blankets are also a common cause of household fires.

To help keep our community safe, Norfolk Trading Standards and Norfolk Fire & Rescue Service are running a series of free electric blanket and heater testing events this October.

Bring your electric blanket, heated throw or small portable heater along for a free safety check. If you can’t attend in person, a friend, relative or neighbour can bring it on your behalf.

Electric Blanket Safety Advice

Whether or not you attend an event, please take a few minutes to check your blanket and follow this safety advice. It could save a life.

Choosing a Blanket

  • Only buy from a reliable source
  • Never buy second-hand electric blankets
  • Check that it carries a UK safety mark

Storing Your Blanket

  • You can keep blankets on your bed year-round, even when not in use
  • Ideally, store flat on a spare bed
  • If that’s not possible, loosely roll or gently fold (never squash the wires)
  • Never store heavy items on top of your blanket

Using Your Blanket

  • Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions
  • Never use an electric underblanket as an overblanket (or vice versa)
  • Do not use with hot water bottles
  • Never pin the blanket to the bed
  • Do not use if you have an airflow pressure relief mattress or if you are using emollient creams

Checking Your Blanket

Regularly inspect your blanket for damage or warning signs, such as:

  • Worn or frayed fabric
  • Scorch marks
  • Wires poking through the material
  • Damage to the cord
  • Buzzing sounds, unusual smells, or overheating connectors

👉 If in doubt, throw it out.

Electric blankets should be replaced every 10 years, or sooner if there are signs of wear or damage.
