As Age UK Norwich celebrates 80 years of service, they revive a proud tradition, backing local group, with new kits for the city’s unstoppable Soca Seniors.
The partnership comes as Age UK Norwich marks its 80th anniversary, and it’s more than just a generous gesture—it’s a proud nod to the charity’s community roots. In the 1960s and 1970s, Age UK Norwich funded and supported many grassroots groups that helped older people in the city stay active, connected, and independent. Today, they’re keeping that legacy alive by backing one of the most vibrant sporting communities for older people in the county.
And what a team they’ve backed. The Soca Seniors are not just making up the numbers—they’re dominating the pitch. With a string of recent tournament wins, the club is a beacon of healthy ageing, camaraderie, and sporting excellence. Over 160 members strong, with nearly 80 lacing up their boots weekly, the group includes a thriving over-70s team that continues to defy expectations—and age stereotypes. The team are also incredibly active in their local community, hosting their own charity tournament each year for local groups.
"As we have multiple members participating in local and regional WFA tournaments the support from AGE UK Norwich, in celebration of their 80thanniversary, of new kit for our over 50’s team is very much appreciated. We know that Walking Football and the exercise and interaction it provides supports both physical and mental health, Charities like AGE UK provide a significant level of support for those over 50 and NSS look to continue to work with AGE UK in the future.” Said Soca Seniors Chair Neville Townsend.
The new kits, proudly emblazoned with the Age UK Norwich logo, made their debut on Sunday 8th of June as the team headed to Grimsby for a tournament game, bringing an extra boost of pride and professionalism to a team already full of passion. The team won 2 out of 5 games and the tournament raised over £2000 towards the purchase of portable defibrillators for teams/match officials.
Age UK Norwich Patron William Armstrong OBE was in attendance to get a first look at the new kits along with the Soca Seniors Chair Neville Townsend.
Age UK Norwich CEO Dan Skipper said of the sponsorship “What better way to celebrate 80 years than by reconnecting with our heritage of supporting grassroots groups? Soca Seniors embody everything Age UK Norwich stand for—active living, social connection, and the power of community. We’re proud to sponsor them.”
With goals flying in on the pitch and history powering them from the sidelines, the Soca Seniors are proving that when age meets ambition, the results are truly golden.
