A memorial plaque honouring the life and achievements of disability rights champion George Saunders was unveiled at Hay Hill, Norwich, on Wednesday 19th November 2025.

The ceremony took place at the newly revamped Hay Hill site, which Norwich City Council transformed into a beautifully designed, fully accessible public garden in the heart of the city – a fitting tribute to George’s lifelong commitment to accessibility and inclusion.

George Saunders (1st April 1952 – 14th April 2019) led an extraordinary life marked by adventure, determination, and a profound commitment to improving the lives of disabled people across Norwich and Norfolk.

From exploring the English countryside in his youth to travelling across the globe, George embraced life with curiosity and a spirit of adventure. In later years, a near-fatal illness left him with Guillain-Barré Syndrome, causing a gradual loss of mobility. Yet his determination only strengthened. Through tireless effort and rehabilitation, he regained significant independence and dedicated himself to championing the rights and accessibility needs of disabled people.

George’s sister, Frances, attended the unveiling alongside Dave Shraga, Chairperson of the Inclusive Norwich Charity (formerly Norwich Access Group). Both shared reflections on George’s remarkable legacy before the plaque was revealed.

Frances spoke movingly about her brother’s life and determination: “My brother George was a very private person who never boasted about his achievements. Standing here today for the unveiling of his plaque makes me incredibly proud. He dedicated so much of his life to helping people with mobility issues gain better access to public spaces and facilities, and it’s wonderful to see that work recognised.”

Dave Shraga paid tribute to George’s transformative impact on accessibility across the region: “George was an outstanding campaigner for accessibility, and he put in an incredible amount of hard work. It’s wonderful to see this plaque in such a beautiful space, one that the council has made so accessible through the partnership we built together. George’s dedication over so many years made it possible for Inclusive Norwich to work closely with the council to improve places like this. That’s why it feels so fitting that the plaque has been installed here.”

George’s passion for equality and his unwavering belief in the potential of every individual continue to inspire those working to create a more inclusive Norwich. The placement of his memorial plaque at the accessible Hay Hill gardens symbolises the lasting impact of his advocacy, creating spaces where everyone, regardless of ability, can gather and enjoy the city.
