New role offers a flexible way to support people aged 50+

Age UK Oxfordshire has launched a new volunteering opportunity to help people aged 50+ build confidence, reconnect with their communities and achieve personal goals.
The charity’s new Face-to-Face Befriender role is part of its Enabling Connections project and offers a flexible, fixed-term volunteering opportunity lasting 24 weeks. Volunteers commit two to three hours a week, supporting a local person aged 50+ to identify a goal that matters to them and take steps towards achieving it.
Many people would like to volunteer but may not be able to commit to an ongoing role alongside work, caring responsibilities, family commitments or other responsibilities. This new opportunity offers a flexible way to make a meaningful difference while fitting around everyday life.
“Many people tell us they would like to volunteer but worry about signing up to something open-ended,” said Leigh Hogan, Volunteer Manager at Age UK Oxfordshire.
“This role offers a different approach. Over six months, volunteers can support someone to build confidence, reconnect with activities they enjoy and feel more involved in their community — all while fitting volunteering around their own lives.”
Rather than providing long-term befriending, volunteers work alongside an individual over a six-month period to identify a personal goal, create a plan and celebrate progress along the way.
Goals could include attending local groups, returning to hobbies, building confidence to travel independently, using technology to stay connected or becoming more involved in community life.
The role aims to help reduce loneliness, improve wellbeing and support people aged 50+ to feel more connected within their local communities.
No previous experience is needed. Age UK Oxfordshire is looking for people who are empathetic, reliable and passionate about supporting others. Volunteers will receive training and ongoing support to help them feel confident in the role.
