What’s on your doorstep? Celebrating connection this International Day of Older People

This International Day of Older People, we’re celebrating the people, places and services across Oxfordshire that help older people stay connected to their communities.
This year’s UK theme, “What’s on your doorstep?”, shines a light on the local groups, activities, services and community spaces that can help people stay active, independent and connected as they get older.
Across Oxfordshire, there are many opportunities for older people to meet others, learn new skills, stay active and get support when they need it.
From community groups and village halls to cafés, advice services and volunteer-led activities, having opportunities to connect with others can make a real difference to wellbeing.
But not everyone can easily access what’s on their doorstep. Poor transport links, mobility difficulties, disability, health conditions, caring responsibilities or a lack of confidence can all make it harder to get out and take part. For people living in rural areas, these challenges can be even greater.
Helping people stay connected
We work with older people across Oxfordshire to help them find and access local activities, services and support. We also provide support for people who are unable to leave home, helping them stay connected when getting out and about is no longer easy.
Paul Ringer, CEO of Age UK Oxfordshire, said: “Strong communities help people to age well. Across Oxfordshire, there are fantastic local groups, services and volunteers who make a real difference to older people’s lives every day.
“But we know that not everyone finds it easy to access the support and opportunities around them. Something as simple as a lack of transport, declining health or caring responsibilities can leave people feeling isolated and cut off from their community.
“We’re working for a fairer later life in Oxfordshire. That means making sure more people can access the support, services and social connections that help them stay independent and live well.
“This International Day of Older People, we’re celebrating everything that helps older people stay connected. But we know too many people still face barriers to taking part. No one should be excluded from community life because of where they live or the challenges they face.”
