Taking action to protect mental wellbeing in later life

Published on 12 May 2026 09:31 AM

This Mental Health Awareness Week, we’re talking about the everyday challenges that can quietly, but powerfully, affect older people’s mental wellbeing – and urging people to take action early.

We’re highlighting that mental wellbeing is often shaped by life events such as bereavement, illness, caring responsibilities, financial pressure and loneliness. While these challenges can affect anyone, they are especially common in later life, with loneliness and rising living costs increasing anxiety for many older people across Oxfordshire.

“Many of the people we support wouldn’t say they’re struggling with their mental health,” said Paul Ringer, CEO.

“But worries about money, changes in health, caring for someone else, or going days without meaningful human contact can slowly build up. Over time, that can seriously affect wellbeing, confidence and how people feel about their lives. Acting early, with the right support, can make a real difference.”

As a local charity we offer a range of support to improve mental wellbeing and reduce anxiety by:

  • Providing clear, trustworthy information and advice that reduces stress and uncertainty
  • Helping people check and claim the financial support they are entitled to
  • Connecting older people with local activities, groups and social opportunities
  • Supporting people to stay independent, confident and connected in their own homes and communities

“Mental Health Awareness Week reminds us that action doesn’t have to be dramatic to be effective,” added Paul.

“Often, it’s about practical, everyday support – clear advice, help with a form, or feeling more connected to the community around you. These steps may seem small, but they can have a real and lasting impact.”

We’re encouraging anyone who is concerned about an older person — whether a family member, friend or neighbour — to take action by starting a conversation and helping them access support sooner rather than later.
