Three peaks, 24 miles and 12 hours... can you do it?

The Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge is a 24-miles (38.6km) round trip route, and includes 1585 (5200ft) of ascent.

The Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge takes on the peaks of Pen-y-Ghent (694 metres), Whernside (736 metres) and Ingleborough (723 metres), usually in this order, and in under 12 hours. These hills form part of the Pennine range, and encircle the head of the valley of the River Ribble, in the Yorkshire Dales National Park.

We begin the challenge at 6am in Chapel le Dale (free parking provided for our participants), walking the route anti-clockwise - Ingleborough, then Pen-y-Ghent and Whernside last, finishing at the same place.

Location: £16 registration fee and £64 to be paid by Saturday 30 May 2026 - paid directly to Three Peaks Challenge
Fundraising: Age UK Plymouth asks participants to fundraise a minimum of £200. All participants raising funds for Age UK Plymouth will receive a medal and certificate.

If you would like to purchase a charity branded wicking top, please contact fundraising@ageukplymouth.org.uk to place your order. All orders must be received by Friday 25 June 2026 and costs £15.

Meet in Chapel le Dale.

Arrive haven eaten breakfast. Free parking available in Chapel le Dale, in the field next to The Old Hill Inn, or the layby off the road.

Meet your leader and team.

By 6:00AM

Start the challenge, as each group is ready to set off.

Summit of Ingleborough.

Approx 10:00AM

Summit of Pen-y-Ghent.

Ribblehead Viaduct, stop for second water top-ups.

Summit of Whernside.

Target time to complete the challenge! We finish the challenge where we started, in Chapel le Dale, next to The Old Hill Inn - excellent food is available here if you fancy it.

Travelling to Yorkshire

By car, travel is via the M6 then A687, or A65 from the Kendle or Leeds direction. By train, there are regular services to Settle, Horton-in-Ribblesdale and Ribblehead, with lovely views!

Consult a medical professional before beginning any new exercise routine. Listen to your body and take regular rest days for recovery.

Food and drink

During the walk itself, we suggest snacks such as fruit, dried fruit, nuts, cereal bars and pasta.

We recommend having a good but not heavy breakfast, and ideally not taking any long stops during the challenge.

Kit list

Guidance from Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge:

Mandatory

  • Walking boots (with ankle support, not trail shoes or trainers)
  • Head torch (mandatory from April and October events)
  • Waterproof jacket
  • Waterproof overtrousers (with taped seams)
  • Hiking socks
  • Backpack (approx. 15-20 litre size)
  • Water container (bottle or Camelbak-style, 1-2 litres)
  • Food & hill snacks (prepared pasta, cereal bars, dried fruit, nuts)
  • Gloves
  • Hat (covering ears)

Reccommended clothing:

  • Walking trousers or sports leggings (not jeans or tracksuit trousers)
  • Sport top (not cotton)
  • Warm outer layer (fleece or windstopper-type)
