St Mary’s Church, Ellesmere, is to host a musical extravaganza to celebrate the late Queen Elizabeth’s Platinum Jubilee and the Accession of King Charles III.

The concert, in aid of Age UK North Shropshire Supporters and St Mary’s Church, will take place on Saturday, 15 October at 7.30pm.

The show will feature the Ellesmere College Choral Society, students from Ellesmere College, and The Shrewsbury Light Orchestra.

Tony Coupe, Director of Music at Ellesmere College, said: ‘The Platinum Proms will include all the usual elements of a Last Night of the Proms, with the orchestra playing the Sea Songs and Elgar’s Pomp and Circumstance. The Choral Society set is all taken from the Queen’s Coronation in 1953, and much of it will likely feature in the forthcoming coronation.’

The audience can look forward to Parry’s Jerusalem, Holst’s I Vow to Thee My Country, and Handel’s Zadok the Priest.

In a lighter mood, people will be encouraged to sing-a-long to songs from Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Oklahoma whilst the College Chamber Choir will bring things more up-to-date with the best of the Beatles and Simon & Garfunkel.

Anne Wignall, Chair of Age UK North Shropshire Supporters, said: ‘It will be great to see a return of the Proms to St Mary’s following the COVID lockdowns. We’re digging out our bunting and Union Jack flags so that everyone can join in waving them at the appropriate moment!’

David Reffell, church fundraiser, said: ‘This will be a fantastic evening of rousing music and we’re looking forward to welcoming music lovers to this special event. Tickets are priced according to seat location and visibility, and include a welcome or interval drink.’

Tickets cost £7.50, £10.00 and £12.50 (cash only) and are available from Ismay’s Fashions and Canvas & Clay, Ellesmere, or by emailing davidwreffell@gmail.com
