New dementia support group a success

Age UK Shropshire Telford & Wrekin’s new dementia support group in Bishop’s Castle is already proving a success with local families.

The Mayor of Bishop’s Castle, Josh Dickin, officially opened the new monthly group, which is part of a countywide network run by Age UK Shropshire Telford & Wrekin to support local people living with dementia or memory difficulties and their families, carers and friends.

Those attending the first meeting, which featured tea, cakes and ice-breaker quizzes to allow people to get to know each other, described it as fun and worthwhile and were looking forward to future get-togethers.

Among those attending were local couple Yvonne and George who, during a getting to know you session, told the group of their life-long love of horses. They had even brought a photograph along of George on horseback in his younger days. The picture was one of several items brought to the event that sparked conversations.

‘It’s really lovely when people who’d previously never met find themselves chatting away with one another over a cup of tea and having a nice time,’ said Karen Rawlings, a Service Development Officer at Age UK Shropshire Telford & Wrekin and organiser of the Bishop’s Castle group.

This is just one of the many groups and activities set up to support older people in the area, thanks to funding secured from the Masonic Charitable Foundation.

Emma Wilde, our Wellbeing Services Manager, said: ‘You can always expect a friendly welcome on arrival at our groups and an opportunity to get to know others and share experiences in a relaxed atmosphere. We also offer you the chance to learn more about dementia and to ask questions, while we provide fun and interesting activities.’
