Personal Assistant role
Are you interested in becoming a PA?
The PA role provides an opportunity to make a meaningful impact on someone’s life.
Through tailored support and care, you’ll help individuals maintain independence and live life on their own terms. Every person’s needs are unique, so no two days will ever be the same.
Being a PA isn’t just a job - it’s a vocation for people who want to make life better for others and build a career filled with purpose and genuine relationships.
FAQs for PAs
What is a PA?
As a PA, you help adults or children with disabilities, health conditions, or other support needs live life to the fullest - maintaining independence, dignity, and achieving personal aspirations through support with everyday activities, personal care, and meaningful social connections.
Most of your time will be spent supporting the individual in their home, though you may also help them attend appointments, go to work, or enjoy social outings.
In this role, you’ll form meaningful, long-term connections with employers and their families, playing an important role in their everyday life.
Who can be a PA?
If you’re caring, patient, and a good listener with strong communication skills, you have what it takes to make a difference as a PA. You’ll instinctively put the person first, seeing them for who they truly are rather than the challenges they face.
If helping others and witnessing the life-changing effects of your support inspires you, becoming a PA is deeply fulfilling.
What experience is required?
No formal experience is required. Your values and life experiences matter - they’re key to being a great PA.
If you’ve supported or cared for a family member or worked in health and social care, those experiences will be a real asset in becoming a PA.
If an employer is looking for specific experience, then this will be detailed in the job description.
What qualifications are required?
No formal qualifications are required.
Who is the employer?
As a PA you are directly employed by the individual who needs support and care and they become your employer. If the individual is a child, then their parents will be the employer.
Can I work part-time?
Being a PA gives you the freedom and flexibility to work in a way that fits your life. You decide your weekly hours and whether to work with multiple employers.
Do I need a DBS check to work as a PA?
A Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check is legally required if you provide support or care for a child.
It is recommended that all employers carry out a DBS check on their potential PAs if they are carrying out regulated activity.
How can I find a PA role in Solihull?
Whether you’re new to the PA role, currently employed, or self-employed, you’re welcome to join the Solihull PA Register.
How does the Solihull PA Register work?
Our team uses the Register to match PAs with employers who receive direct payments from Solihull Council.
Your match with an employer will be based on their care needs, your availability, and the areas in Solihull where you’re happy to work.
Our team will call you to develop your profile on the Register. You will be required to send an up to date CV which will then activate your profile. We need your CV to be able to send to prospective employers when there is a match.
I am a self-employed PA - can I join the Register?
You can join the Solihull PA Register if you are a self-employed PA.
Is there any training available?
Currently there is no training provided by Solihull Council.
Depending on the employer’s needs you may require qualifications or certificates for things such as food hygiene, manual handling, and first aid.
Skills for Care offers funding to cover the cost of care-related training; your employer can apply for this.
