Age UK York's Social Groups bring together older residents from across York to recreat a street party atmosphere in commemorating VE Day at 80.
Our local VE Day Celebrations saw our local Social groups come together as one as older people from across York celebrated the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe Day (VE Day).
Maria (Pickard) our Social Club Manager here at Age UK York shared the motivation and how much all those attending got from the day.
Sharing memories of the first VE Day
The celebration saw people sharing stories from the very first VE Day. Oneof those attending was 7 in 1945 and recalls "happy memories of VE Day itself with a light hearted atmosphere, singing in the street and a bit of a knees-up!"

Another of our wonderful Social Club goers shared their personal story and the impact of VE Day after years of war that very much touched their life and fellow residents here in York. They shared to our group about the Baedeker Raids in 1942 and as a school pupil having to take shelter at their local school. They shared the shock, worry and the tragic destruction felt by many though also as child the excitement they felt that school would be delayed the next day after taking shelter the night before!
As a local independent charity we were delighted as Age UK York to be able to host the event though it was only possible with thanks to those who supported it including Acomb Methodist Church. We were also grateful to both Fiona Fitzpatrick, Sheriff of York and Geoff Cossins as the Sheriff's Consort for joining the event.
A special thank you to our wonderful team who went above and beyond in making the celebration happen and to all those who attended as the stars of the show.
What are our Social Clubs?
Each week Age UK York offer these important social events. They our designed around older people and are a great opportunity to come together. For so many who attend it is one, if not the only, chance they have during a week to come together with others, talk and laugh. As Age UK York we recognise the value on which so many depend and the Social Clubs are part of our local efforts to tackle loneliness and social isolation here in York.
We can though only continue to offer and grow this offer with your kind support.
