2018 Crowdfunding appeal launched. Support our Active Together Buddying Project today!

Published on 20 November 2018 12:09 PM

Today we are launching our 2018 crowdfunding appeal for Active Together! We have just 33 days to raise £3,000! The appeal closes on the 19th December.

Each year, Age UK Bristol runs a crowdfunding appeal. We are very happy to highlight the great work of the Active Together project! Consider making a donation instead of sending Christmas cards or making a donation as a gift for someone.

£3,000 will pay for a full three months of this amazing project. Active Together Dementia Buddying Project matches up a person living with dementia with a volunteer who has similar interests. The pairs go out weekly or fortnightly to do activities that they both enjoy. With a bit of extra support, a person with dementia can maintain their physical activity and increase their wellbeing. Age UK Bristol provides training and ongoing support for the volunteers.

Hear from our Active Together Volunteer, James:
“Dave has dementia.  We meet most weeks.  He knows who I am but he never remembers my name.  He forgets what he has done that morning and he tells the same stories every time I see him.

He lives alone, he has no family and he has never married. I met Dave less than a year ago as a volunteer for Age UK Bristol.  We were matched so I could see him for 2 or 3 hours every two weeks and encourage him to get active. We got on well from the beginning.  His life stories are often half told with parts forgotten but I enjoy listening about tales from his youth.”

We are always looking for new volunteers. Do you have the time to spend a couple of hours a week to make a difference in someone’s life? If you are interested in becoming a buddy to a local older person with dementia, please contact Clare Havard clarehavard@ageukbristol.org.uk. Feel free to call for an informal chat to see if this is the role for you.
