Launch of new support service for veterans

Published on 25 June 2020 08:00 AM

Age UK Bristol are delighted to announce that we have been successful in a bid for funding to create a new project aimed at supporting older veterans in Bristol. The new project will be launched during Armed Forces Week, 22nd – 27th June.

The project will reach out to older veterans in Bristol to offer practical and well-being support through the Coronavirus pandemic. Veterans will be able to access practical support, such as benefits checks, housing, and social care advice, plus help with shopping during the pandemic. Veterans will also be offered services from Age UK Bristol to stay active, occupied and connected with others.*

Age UK Bristol is lucky to have Ashley Jones (MBE) on the board of trustees. Ash works for the Avon and Somerset Police and previously served in the armed forces. Ash said, "As both a volunteer trustee of Age UK Bristol and also a veteran of a 10-year career in the armed forces myself, I understand the circumstances that can lead to older people requiring some additional support to meet their specific needs of being a veteran in the community today.

The new veterans project will ensure older veterans seeking assistance on a range of issues will be supported and helped by people who understand their needs and the way their experiences may have impacted upon their lives. This is a great way to fulfil the national pledge, known as The Armed Forces Covenant, to ensure all veterans and their dependants are treated fairly.”

Due to the short-term nature of the funding it is vitally important to raise awareness of this project so that we can reach and support as many older veterans as possible during this time. If you know of anyone who may benefit from accessing the support available, please share this article with them.
