Chief Operations Officer (COO)

Part or full-time Chief Operations Officer, Local Charity, 30 hrs/wk, Hemel Hempstead & Remote, c.£45k fte

Age UK Dacorum is currently looking for someone to take on the role as our Chief Operations Officer.

This is a great opportunity to join our local charity in an influential position, overseeing the broad range of services we offer to older people and their carers.

Age UK Dacorum is a local independent charity based in Hemel Hempstead. Our mission is to promote the well-being of all older people and their carers within Dacorum. We do this by providing a wide range of services and activities with the aim of helping to make later life fulfilling and enjoyable.

The Role

We have 44 staff who are full and part-time, and 285 volunteers that provide a wide range of services for older people and their carers including:

  • Clubs
  • Carers’ Support
  • Befriending
  • Bereavement Support
  • Early intervention (Dementia service)
  • Handyperson
  • NHS managed services
  • Personal Assistant Scheme
  • Other local initiatives for its clients

The Chief Operations Officer will oversee all these functions. There is a very strong balance sheet and a strong senior management team who will report to the COO. The COO will then report to the Chair of Trustees.

The COO will also, in conjunction with the Trustees, be engaged in planning for the future, recommending new initiatives, developing the SMT, and work with outside providers as and when required.

The Candidate

We are seeking to engage someone with experience of (or capability to) lead the growth of the organisation. A passionate and driven candidate with a positive, proactive, and pragmatic approach, you’ll have a true belief in the ethos of the charity and the services they offer.

The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate:

  • Relevant experience at a senior level, preferably in a similar organisation or related field
  • Commercial focus
  • Previous financial management and control responsibility
  • Project management skills
  • Good communication skills, both oral and written
  • Good IT skills
  • Experience managing staff and/or volunteers
  • Knowledge or experience of the challenges facing small charities
  • Demonstrable willingness to be hands on when necessary
  • Proven skills at delegating appropriately
  • Empathy with the charity’s core aims and values

Terms

This role is offered on a permanent basis working a minimum of 30 hrs/wk (standard working week is 35 hrs). The hours can be worked in a pattern to suit both parties. The role is hybrid split between home and office in Hemel Hempstead. A salary of c.45k fte is on offer depending on experience.

Handy Person

The role of the Handyperson is to complete small DIY tasks that older people are no longer able to do for themselves, thus enabling them to remain in their own home and community.  To deliver a competent and friendly service, with the ability to manage your own time and workload.

Location

Hemel Hempstead, Watford & surrounding areas.

Hours

17 hours per week. £10.04 per hour.

Line Manager

Handyperson Officer.

Responsible for

Undertaking and completing a range of DIY/Handyperson tasks.

Duties

To complete a range of DIY, security and safety jobs for people over 50, or their carers. The list below is not exhaustive, but details the most common tasks the service undertakes. You will need to be comfortable working in a variety of environments.

  •  Hanging blinds/curtains.
  •  Security work – fit smoke alarms, install stair handrails, grab rails, fit phone extensions for “Lifeline facility” to be installed.
  •  Minor electrical work – change light bulbs, fit fluorescent tubes and starters.
  • Minor plumbing work - changing tap washers, reseating taps.
  •   Carpentry – fitting shelves, curtain rails, and blinds.
  •   Assembling furniture
  •  Mounting mirrors, pictures, fitting and repairing doorbells.
  •  Basic gardening and maintenance including fencing.
  • To attend training sessions and meetings when necessary.
  • To always maintain confidentiality.
  • To work with and support volunteers handypersons.
  • To maintain accurate records of tasks completed.
  • To undertake other appropriate duties as agreed with the Handyperson        officer.

It is essential to have your own reliable transport as travel between clients is an integral part of the job. The successful applicant will need to undergo and pass an enhanced Police DBS check. To uphold the integrity and high standards that our users require from AGE UK Dacorum.

The role will primarily focus on installing Key safes with 17 hours being offered as minimum, but this may change when demand increases.

Activities Coordinator

 

SCHOOL HOURS POSITION, WOULD SUIT PARENTS/CARERS OF SCHOOL AGE CHILDREN

15 hours per week:- Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays

Enthusiastic, well-organised person needed to co-ordinate and facilitate activities at Young at Heart Clubs for older people (tenants) in Dacorum Borough Council’s Sheltered Housing Schemes AND activity clubs for older people with mild to moderate memory loss/Dementia.

You will be a confident communicator, have excellent interpersonal skills, empathy for older people and a good knowledge of Microsoft office.

Experience of working with people affected by memory loss preferred but not essential as training can be provided.

The right person will be imaginative, responsible, reliable and willing to work under supervision and on their own initiative.

Contract is initially for 6 months, but is highly likely to be extended if the probation period is passed.

Current driving licence and own car essential.
