Age UK Hertfordshire is supporting the introduction of a new Homeshare service in Hertfordshire, delivered by Two Generations, a specialist UK Homeshare provider dedicated to tackling loneliness and social isolation through shared living arrangements.
Homeshare is a simple idea with a powerful impact
It matches an older person who has a spare room, looking for support and companionship, with someone seeking affordable accommodation, helping to create greater connection and support at home.
In return for a place to live, the Homesharer provides overnight reassurance, daily companionship and up to 10 hours of light help a week. This is not a care service, but a practical arrangement that supports independence and wellbeing.
Both the Householder and the Homesharer pay a monthly fee to Two Generations, which covers the matching process and ongoing support throughout the arrangement.
What is Homeshare?
Homeshare brings together two people who can benefit from living together:
• A Householder – an older person with a spare room who would benefit from companionship, overnight reassurance and occasional help at home
• A Homesharer – someone looking for affordable, meaningful accommodation who is happy to offer time, presence and light support in return
Each match is carefully considered based on lifestyle, preferences and compatibility. This is not a care service. Homeshare is about shared living, mutual respect and practical support.
How Homeshare works
Typical support may include:
• Companionship and conversation
• Help with everyday tasks such as cooking, shopping or getting to appointments
• Light household tasks or gardening
• Technology support
• Overnight reassurance and an increased sense of security at home
Every arrangement is unique and agreed in advance between both parties, shaped by the needs and preferences of the Householder and Homesharer.
How the service is delivered
All Homeshare arrangements are professionally managed by Two Generations, who are responsible for:
• Screening and safeguarding checks
• Matching Householders and Homesharers
• Facilitating introductions and agreements
• Providing ongoing support throughout the arrangement
Age UK Hertfordshire supports the service by raising awareness and helping connect people locally who may benefit.
Safety and safeguarding
Safety is central to the Homeshare service. All Homesharers go through a detailed application and screening process, which includes:
• Enhanced DBS checks
• Verification of identity and right to live in the UK
• Proof of current address
• Confirmation of financial suitability for the programme
• Two written references
• In-depth interviews, video calls and home visits
• Introductory meetings and a trial period before any arrangement is confirmed
Every match is carefully considered to ensure compatibility, safety and shared expectations. Arrangements are managed and supported throughout, with regular check-ins to ensure the relationship is working well for both parties.
