What can JAY do for a loved one this spring?

Published on 10 April 2026 04:08 PM

For many families, Easter is a time to catch up, spend time together, and check in on the people who matter most. Yet sometimes, after a visit, you come away with a quiet feeling that something is not quite the same.

It may not be one big issue. It might just be a few small signs that everyday life is becoming a bit harder than it used to be. The shopping feels more tiring. The paperwork has started to build up. The house is a little harder to keep on top of. The garden is looking like it needs attention. Or perhaps Mum, Dad, Nan or Grandad just seems a bit more isolated, less confident, or in need of a little extra support.

Spring often brings these things into focus.

As the days get lighter and routines begin to shift, many people start thinking about getting things back in order after winter. But for some older people, this can also be the time when the little everyday jobs at home begin to feel more difficult or more stressful to manage alone.

That is where Age UK Isle of Wight’s Just About You service, known as JAY, can help.

JAY is a friendly, flexible home help service designed to support people to continue living independently in their own homes. It offers practical help with everyday tasks such as housework, shopping, meal preparation, light gardening, getting out and about, paperwork, and companionship. JAY does not provide personal care or medication handling.

Support with the everyday things that matter

Often, the biggest difference comes from help with the small things.

That could mean someone helping with a weekly shop, preparing meals, doing a bit of light tidying, or assisting with admin and paperwork. It might mean support to get to an appointment, a trip out, or simply having a regular social visit and a friendly face at the door.

For some families, this kind of support can ease growing worries before they become bigger problems. For the person receiving the support, it can help life feel calmer, more manageable, and more comfortable at home.

JAY can help with:

  • General housework and light gardening
  • Shopping, with someone or on their behalf
  • Meal preparation
  • Outings and transport
  • Companionship and social visits
  • Basic admin and paperwork support

Support shaped around the person

No two people are the same, and neither are their needs.

Some people may benefit from regular weekly help. Others may only need occasional support, or a little extra help during a difficult patch or change in circumstances. JAY is designed to be personal and adaptable, with support shaped around the individual and how they would like their time to be used.

That is often an important reassurance for families. Asking for help does not have to mean a big upheaval. In many cases, it is simply about putting the right support in place at the right time, so that someone can stay independent and feel more confident at home.

A trusted, local service

When you are looking into support for someone you love, trust matters.

Age UK Isle of Wight’s JAY support workers are DBS checked, reference checked, trained, and easily identifiable. They are supported by a co-ordinator who stays in touch to help make sure the service is working well for each client. After someone gets in touch, the service begins with a home visit to talk through needs, preferences and suitable visiting times before matching them with the right support worker.

That means families can feel reassured that support is not only practical, but thoughtful, personal and well organised too.

A service that gives back locally

JAY is also part of something bigger.

As a charity-run service, JAY helps Age UK Isle of Wight continue its wider work supporting older people across the Island. The guidebook explains that the service is designed to cover its operating costs, and any surplus achieved supports the charity’s broader activities for local people.

So when someone chooses JAY, they are not only arranging practical support at home. They are also choosing a local service connected to a local charity that is here for older Islanders when they need it most.

Thinking about someone you love this spring?

If an Easter visit left you wondering whether a loved one could use a little extra help at home, you are probably not overthinking it.

Sometimes it is not one big event that prompts support. It is simply a growing awareness that a few everyday things are becoming harder, and that having the right help in place could make all the difference.

JAY is here to make those everyday things easier.

To find out more, call 01983 301470 or email jay@ageukiw.org.uk. A member of the team can talk things through with you and help you decide whether the service feels like the right fit.
