A Helping Hand for Dad This Father’s Day

Published on 19 June 2026 04:45 PM

Father’s Day is a time to celebrate the Dads, Grandads, Stepdads and father figures who have supported us, guided us and shaped our lives. It can also be a gentle reminder of how important it is to make sure they feel supported too.

At Age UK Isle of Wight, we know that for many older people, independence means everything. Being able to stay comfortable at home, keep to familiar routines and remain connected to the people and places they love can make a real difference to wellbeing and quality of life.

For some families, Father’s Day may be a good moment to reflect on whether a little extra support could help make everyday life easier for a Dad, Grandad or father figure.

What is the Just About You (JAY) Service?

One way we support older Islanders is through our Just About You (JAY) service, a flexible, bespoke home help service for adults living independently across the Isle of Wight.

JAY offers practical, personalised support tailored to each person’s needs, helping them continue to live well at home while maintaining choice and independence.

That support can look different for everyone. It might mean help with shopping, meal preparation, housework, light gardening, getting out and about, companionship, or support with basic paperwork and admin.

Sometimes it is the practical tasks that make the biggest difference. Sometimes it is simply knowing that there is a trusted person there to help.

A Service Built Around Trust

For families, JAY can bring reassurance as well as practical support. The service is designed to be adaptable, recognising that needs can change from visit to visit, and our support workers are on hand to assist with a range of tasks during each scheduled visit.

We also understand that inviting support into the home is a significant step. That is why trust, safety and quality are at the heart of everything we do.

Our support workers are DBS checked, reference checked, fully inducted, and trained in safeguarding, food hygiene, health and safety, and data protection. They wear a uniform and carry an ID badge, and each client is supported by a designated co-ordinator who checks in regularly to make sure the service is working well.

Part of Something Bigger

JAY is one of many ways we support older people on the Island. Age UK Isle of Wight also offers a wider range of services including Information and Signposting, Digital Support, Hospital Discharge Support, Social Groups and Befriending, and Dementia Care Navigation, because we know that staying independent can mean different things to different people.

As a local independent charity, our work is rooted in the needs of older Islanders. We have been supporting people on the Isle of Wight since 1973, helping those aged 50 and over to live fulfilling later lives. Choosing our services also helps support that wider mission in the community.

This Father’s Day, for anyone thinking about how best to support a Dad, Grandad or father figure, it may be worth starting a conversation about what could help them stay independent, connected and well at home.

Sometimes, the most meaningful support begins with a simple helping hand.
