Together this Summer: Finding Purpose and Confidence Through Companionship Service

Published on 08 July 2026 10:07 AM

A simple Facebook advert led to shared walks, laughter, newfound confidence and a friendship that has changed two lives.

When Judith Brown first discovered Age UK Norfolk's Gift of Friendship befriending service, she was at a difficult point in her life. Having recently been made redundant and struggling to find work, she was looking for a new direction—and a way to make a positive difference.

"I initially found out about volunteering with Age UK Norfolk through Facebook adverts," Judith explains. "I had been out of work for a while after being made redundant and wasn't finding it easy to secure another job. I had worked in schools for several years and thought a change to supporting older people would be a good fit."

Originally, Judith saw volunteering as a way to gain experience and strengthen her CV while searching for employment. But what began as an opportunity to give back soon became something much more meaningful.

"Volunteering has given me a sense of purpose, someone else to think about and something to look forward to."

As a befriender, Judith regularly spends time with an older person in her local community, often enjoying walks together and exploring Norfolk's countryside.

"We usually go for walks in the local area and share our love of nature," she says. "My service user is much more knowledgeable than me about birds and wildlife, so I'm learning every week. I've discovered new places to walk and it's wonderful hearing the stories of their life."

The friendship has brought benefits for them both. For Judith's befriendee, the support has helped build confidence and independence. Together they have worked towards personal goals, including becoming more comfortable leaving the house and spending time in the community.

"Their goal was to get out more and build confidence because they are uncomfortable with crowds. We've been for walks, had coffee in a local café and attended an Age UK Norfolk and Aviva coffee morning together. They were able to enjoy the event because I was there to support them." Today, Judith is delighted to see just how far they've come. "I was recently told that they have been going out for regular walks on their own."

For Judith, volunteering has been just as rewarding personally.

"I believe I have got as much out of this service as my service user. It got me out of the house, gave me a purpose and something positive to focus on."

Together this Summer

This summer, Age UK Norfolk is celebrating the power of connection through its Together this Summer campaign, highlighting how small acts of kindness can make a lasting difference.

Befriending isn't just about reducing loneliness for older people—it's about building meaningful relationships, increasing confidence, encouraging independence and creating stronger communities where everyone feels connected.

Judith's story is a reminder that volunteering can change lives in unexpected ways. Whether you're looking to give back, meet new people or simply make a difference in someone's life, becoming a befriender could be one of the most rewarding things you ever do.

Could you make a difference?

If you have a little time to spare and enjoy spending time with others, we'd love to hear from you. As a befriender, you'll receive training and ongoing support while helping an older person feel more connected to their community—and you may find, just like Judith, that you gain just as much as you give.
