Making a cake for Christmas

Cutting the dementia support group's Christmas cake

Members of an Age UK Shropshire Telford & Wrekin dementia support group tasted the fruits of their labours this week as they finished their delicious Christmas cake.

During the last few months, people living with dementia and their carers from the Pontesbury area have been meeting together at one of our dementia support groups to make, decorate and finally eat together, a Christmas cake. During their last session of the year, musicians from Newport Ukes entertained the group whilst they enjoyed their festive treat.

Mixing the Christmas cake

Emma Wilde, our Senior Day Services Co-ordinator, has been organising the group activities and reminiscence over the last few weeks. Emma said: ‘We are so pleased how the cake has turned out; everyone took part from mixing it to making the decorations and it tastes amazing. The cake making has led to lots of enjoyable conversations around Christmases past.’

One of the group’s members told Emma: ‘I have never made a cake before, I was really looking forward to coming today to eat the cake and it is really good’, while one of the carers added: ’The cake is lovely and the sessions are lots of fun.’

Decorating the Christmas cake

The group, which meets fortnightly at School Green, comes together for companionship, activity and information on dementia in a safe and welcoming environment.
