Local Age UK Shropshire Telford & Wrekin day centre members arranged a celebratory send off for their wonderful volunteer organiser Joan Bird, who is retiring from her role at Newport day centre.
Joan has been running the Newport day centre every Tuesday at the Adams Close Community Room for many years. Joan and her team of volunteers organise transport, activities, refreshments and much more to make sure older people who attend receive an enjoyable day out.
Even during the pandemic, the work didn’t stop; Joan went above and beyond for all of her members during the multiple lockdowns. Joan created and delivered monthly newsletters, made regular phone calls, checking in to see if everyone was doing well and using the funds normally spent on day centre activities to purchase and deliver fruit and salad boxes, providing fresh food at a time when they most needed it.
Heather Osborne, Chief Executive of Age UK Shropshire Telford & Wrekin said: ‘I want to thank Joan for her dedication and hard work organising the Newport day centre for many years and always going the extra mile for older people in her community. She has definitely made a difference to the lives of her day centre members.’
Age UK Shropshire Telford & Wrekin wanted to thank Joan for her dedication, kindness and going above and beyond for older people in her community. Joan will be missed by everyone and we all send her the well wishes for the future.
