Act Now, Age Better

As the team at Age UK Shropshire Telford & Wrekin continue to rebuild our services, we’re delighted to see so many people getting behind our Act Now, Age Better campaign and #Challenge75 fundraising initiative.
The campaign is all about encouraging people of every age and ability to keep moving, stay connected so that they enjoy a healthy lifestyle in later life. We know that regular movement, whether it’s walking, dancing, cycling, swimming or even carrying the shopping, can make a huge difference to both physical and mental wellbeing.
Through #Challenge75, we’re inviting supporters to complete 75 miles, minutes or laps in whatever activity suits them best, while raising funds to help Age UK Shropshire Telford & Wrekin to support older people across the county.
We’ve also got a fantastic line-up of fundraising events coming up over the summer and we’d love to see as many supporters, friends and family members involved as possible.
Following the huge success of last year’s inaugural ride, we’re back in the saddle for our charity bike ride on Sunday 19 July from 10.00am to 1.00pm. Cyclists of all abilities are invited to take part in a scenic 30-mile route around Shrewsbury and the surrounding countryside. Entry is just £15 and includes a well-earned hot drink and slice of cake at the finish line. We’re encouraging participants to raise between £50 and £75 in sponsorship, with the ambitious aim of beating the fantastic £2,400 raised in 2025.
If dancing is more your thing, why not join us for our daytime disco on Saturday 25 July from 1.00pm to 4.00pm at Hadley Community Centre? With hits spanning the 1950s through to the 1980s and plenty of Tamla Motown classics, it promises to be a fun-filled afternoon of music, movement and nostalgia. Tickets must be purchased in advance from Age UK Shropshire Telford & Wrekin.
We’re also looking forward to the Abba singalong and film event at Horsehay Village Golf Club on Wednesday 24 June from 3.00pm to 6.00pm. Expect plenty of singing, dancing, good food and audience participation as we enjoy some timeless classics together.
A huge thank you goes to our dedicated volunteers Martha and Paul Wallace, who have organised a charity pub quiz at Hadley United Club on Friday 3 July. Doors open at 7.00pm and entry is just £2 per person. It’s sure to be a brilliant evening and a great way to support Age UK Shropshire Telford & Wrekin while having some fun.
And finally, dust off your walking boots and save the date, Sunday 23 August, for this year’s Three Peaks challenge. This popular event will take participants on an exciting trek across three neighbouring hills: Breidden Hill, Moel y Golfa and Middletown Hill. Starting from the car park beneath Rodney's Pillar near Welshpool, walkers will climb more than 2,000ft while taking in stunning countryside views along the way. Whether you’re up for the challenge, the scenery, or simply a great day outdoors, it’s an event not to miss, and more details will be announced soon.
Every event, challenge and donation helps us continue providing vital services that keep older people independent, connected and supported in later life.
Thank you to everyone who continues to support our work, whether you’re taking part, volunteering, fundraising or cheering others on. Together, we really are helping people age better.
