Boccia comes to Broseley

A brand-new, fun and inclusive activity is rolling into Broseley this spring, as Age UK Shropshire Telford & Wrekin launches a boccia group designed to bring people together, get them moving, and spark new friendships.
Residents aged 55 and over are warmly invited to a taster session at Birchmeadow Centre on Friday 29 May, from 2.00pm to 4.00pm. The cost is only £3 per person and you can expect an afternoon filled with laughter, friendly competition, and plenty of tea and cake.
Often described as a cross between bowls and pétanque, boccia is a precision target sport played indoors from a seated position. Players aim to throw or roll soft leather balls as close as possible to a white target ball known as the jack. It’s easy to learn, surprisingly competitive, and open to people of all abilities, including those with limited mobility.
“It’ll be an afternoon of tea and cake, with an opportunity to meet people for a chat whilst trying your hand at boccia,” said Jim Hawkins, Wellbeing Services Development Officer at Age UK Shropshire Telford & Wrekin. “We know that social opportunities like these can make a real difference to the wellbeing of older people. We’ll make sure everyone gets a warm welcome.”
The new group has been made possible thanks to funding from South-East Shropshire PCN, which has supported the purchase of specialist boccia equipment.
With its mix of gentle activity and social connection, the boccia group aims to help local people stay active, build confidence, and enjoy meaningful time together in a relaxed and friendly setting.
