Community comes together for cycling challenge

Sunshine, smiles and a shared sense of purpose made this year's Age UK Shropshire Telford & Wrekin cycling challenge a memorable community event, as cyclists of all ages and abilities came together on Sunday 19 July to support older people across the county.

Starting and finishing at Shrewsbury Town Football Club, riders took on a scenic 30-mile route through the Shropshire countryside on a beautiful summer's day. From experienced club cyclists to those simply looking to enjoy a personal challenge, the event brought together people with a common goal, supporting local older people while enjoying the many benefits of cycling.

The ride also welcomed members of Cycling4All, demonstrating that cycling really can be for everyone. Their participation reflected the inclusive spirit of the event, with riders using both standard bicycles, electric-assisted bikes and even a tandem to complete the route at their own pace. As organisers emphasised from the outset, this was never about who finished first, it was about coming together as a community to aid a common cause.

Speaking at the event, Emma Wilde, Interim Head of Wellbeing & Friendship Services at Age UK Shropshire Telford & Wrekin, said: "Every penny raised today will support essential services for older people across Shropshire, helping them stay independent, connected, supported and informed in later life. This cycling challenge is a key part of our 'Act Now Age Better' campaign which inspires people to get active and boost their mental and physical wellbeing whilst making a real difference to their community."

Emma also thanked Shrewsbury Town Foundation for supporting the event and providing an excellent venue. She also expressed her gratitude to the ride leaders who helped marshal and guide participants to keep everyone safe and those individuals who provided refreshments.

Before he and other riders set off, the Mayor of Shrewsbury, councillor Bernie Bentick, spoke about the importance of the charity's work and the power of community. He highlighted how bringing people together through events such as the cycling challenge helps support Age UK Shropshire Telford & Wrekin's mission to tackle loneliness, while also celebrating the physical, mental and social benefits that cycling can bring to people of all ages.

The event was made possible thanks to the support of volunteers, local cycling organisations and community partners, including Cycling UK Shropshire, Shropshire Cycle Hub, Cycling4All and many others who helped create such a welcoming atmosphere throughout the day.

A huge thank you goes to all those who played their part in making the event such a success. Whether cycling every week or taking on the challenge for the very first time, everyone who took part helped demonstrate the strength of our community and its commitment to supporting older people across Shropshire and Telford & Wrekin.
