Dancing in the daylight

Late nights and aching heads were firmly off the agenda as music lovers swapped midnight for Motown at a feel-good Daytime Disco held in aid of local charity Age UK Shropshire Telford & Wrekin.

From the unmistakable sounds of Stevie Wonder and The Supremes to dancefloor favourites made famous by Marvin Gaye, Smokey Robinson and The Temptations, the event delivered an afternoon packed with nostalgia, singing, dancing and good company, all without staying up past bedtime.

The Daytime Disco took place on Saturday 25 July at Hadley Community Centre and featured a soundtrack spanning the 1950s through to the 1980s, with Tamla Motown taking centre stage throughout the afternoon.

Alongside the music, guests enjoyed light refreshments, themed mocktails and a raffle, helping to create what organisers described as “the best house party in town, just held in the afternoon.”

Tickets were sold in advance through the charity, with funds raised supporting the organisation’s work with older people across the county.

Claire Fishlock, Senior Service Development Officer at Age UK Shropshire Telford & Wrekin, said the event was about bringing people together while helping local older residents access vital support.

“Music has a wonderful way of connecting people and bringing back happy memories, so we wanted to create something that felt uplifting, social and genuinely fun. Funds raised by the Daytime Disco will directly help local older people by keeping them independent, connected, supported and informed.”

“There are lots of people aged 50+ who still love to go out dancing and socialising but prefer an afternoon event rather than a late night. So, this was the perfect opportunity to enjoy fantastic music, meet new people and support a local cause at the same time.”

Claire also expressed her gratitude to the team at Hadley Community Centre for providing an excellent venue, DJ Kev Lafferty for keeping guests on the dancefloor throughout the afternoon, the local businesses that generously donated raffle prizes, and the volunteers whose hard work helped make the occasion such a success.

Following the sellout success of the first Daytime Disco, we’ll be hosting more events like this in the future.
