Across south and east Shropshire, Age UK Shropshire Telford & Wrekin’s wellbeing groups are regularly bringing people together to enjoy new activities or experiences, to rediscover old hobbies and, most importantly, to make lasting friendships.

Whether you’re someone who enjoys a quiet game of chess, has a love of sport or simply wants a friendly chat over lunch, there's a welcoming group waiting for you.

Bridgnorth Friendship Group

Looking for a friendly face and good conversation? Our dementia-friendly friendship group offers a warm and relaxed environment for people aged 60 and over to meet others, enjoy light refreshments and spend time together. The group meets every other Wednesday afternoon from 1.00–3.00pm at Bridgnorth Fire Station.

Bridgnorth Walking Rugby

Who says that rugby can only be enjoyed when you’re young? Since launching in April this year, the walking rugby sessions have gone from strength to strength, proving that it's never too late to give something new a try.

This low-impact, non-contact version of the game is perfect for beginners and those returning to rugby after many years away. Played at a walking pace with simple, adapted rules, it's an enjoyable way to improve fitness, boost confidence and meet new people in a safe and supportive environment.

Sessions take place at Bridgnorth Rugby Club on Mondays from 10.00am-12.00pm, and transport is available for anyone who would like to attend but needs help getting there. Attendance is free.

Craven Arms Chip Shop Club

Good food and good company are always a winning combination. Since starting in March 2026, the Craven Arms Chip Shop Club has become a popular monthly get-together.

Members arrive at 11.30am to order their lunch before enjoying quizzes, games and plenty of conversation while they wait. Lunch is served around 12.30pm, making it a relaxing and sociable way to spend an afternoon. The club meets on the third Thursday of each month at Lambeth Close Community Room, with meals costing approximately £7 per person (cash only).

Ludlow Chess Group

Whether you're a seasoned player or have always fancied learning the game, our Ludlow Chess Group welcomes everyone aged 50 and over.

Chess sets are provided, experienced players are on hand to support beginners, and the emphasis is very much on enjoying the game while making new friends. The group meets every Friday from 2.00–4.00pm at Ludlow Library, and attendance is free.

Much Wenlock Friendship Group

Everyone is welcome to join our Much Wenlock Friendship Group for a sociable morning of chat, companionship and a cuppa. Held on the last Tuesday of every month from 10.30am-12.00pm at Pinefields Community Room, the group is a great opportunity for people aged 60 and over to get together, make new connections and enjoy a relaxed, supportive atmosphere. The cost is £3 per person per session.

Spread the word

Many older people don't realise that these activities are available on their doorstep. If you're chatting with someone in Bridgnorth, Craven Arms, Ludlow or Much Wenlock or the surrounding areas, why not mention one of these groups? A simple conversation could be the first step towards helping someone feel less isolated, become more active or make a new group of friends.

Together, we can ensure that even more older people across south and east Shropshire discover the welcoming communities that Age UK Shropshire Telford & Wrekin has to offer.

Could you help us to grow our wellbeing activities?
