Volunteers urgently needed in Runnymede & Spelthorne

Published on 12 April 2019 10:42 AM

Befriending volunteers are urgently needed by Age UK Surrey to support lonely older people in the boroughs of Runnymede and Spelthorne.

The Making Connections service helps older people to stay independent and get the most out of life by matching them with a volunteer who can make regular, social home visits or support them to get more involved in their local community and activities.

If you would like to find out more about volunteering for Age UK Surrey as a befriender, come along to our informal drop-in event on Tuesday 4th June at Nostrano Lounge, 55 High Street, Staines, TW18 4QH any time between 2.30pm and 4.30pm.

While loneliness can affect anyone of any age, it is a sad truth that many older people can go weeks or even months without having a single conversation, particularly if they live alone, have mobility issues or friends and family that are unable to visit regularly. According to Age UK, two fifths of older people in the UK say television is their main form of company.

Sara, the daughter of a Making Connections client said: “The volunteer befriending service offered by Making Connections has made such a difference to Mum’s life. Since she lost the ability to get out and about on her own she has been very lonely. Her volunteer visits on a weekly basis and these visits, as well as the outings they take her on, have made all the difference.”

Debra Davies, Volunteer Lead said: “Making Connections is a vital lifeline for many and it can only run with the support of volunteers. I would urge people to consider offering up to two hours of their time a week to help an older person – you will be making such a difference.”

Age UK Surrey has a variety of volunteer roles available including Befrienders, Volunteer Led Activities, Office Support and Admin, Walk Leaders, Charity Ambassadors, Community Engagement and Digital Specialists.
