What is a DAF?

Donor Advised Fund

A Donor Advised Fund (DAF) is a simple and tax-efficient way to support the charities and causes you care about.

It acts as a dedicated charitable giving account, allowing individuals, families, and organisations to make charitable contributions and recommend grants to eligible charities over time.

You can contribute cash, investments, property, or other assets to your DAF whenever you choose. Once your donation is made, you can decide when and where grants are distributed, giving you the flexibility to plan your charitable giving in a way that suits you.

How does a DAF work?

Make a contribution

You donate cash, shares, securities, or other eligible assets to a Donor Advised Fund, which is managed by a DAF provider.  This could be CAF, Prism, NPT or your bank’s Donor Advised Fund.

Receive tax benefits

Contributions to a DAF may qualify for tax relief, helping to reduce your tax liability while allowing your charitable funds to grow in a tax-efficient environment.

Recommend grants

You can recommend grants from your DAF to charities of your choice. You decide which organisations to support, how much to give, and when grants should be made. The DAF provider is responsible for ensuring that recipient organisations meet HMRC requirements and for carrying out appropriate due diligence.

Grow your charitable impact

Funds held within a DAF can be invested, with any investment growth typically free from tax. This can increase the amount available for future charitable giving.

Benefits of giving through a DAF

Flexible giving

Give in the way that works best for you. Donate cash or assets, make a single contribution or spread your giving over time, and support charities when the moment is right.

Tax-efficient philanthropy

Eligible cash donations may qualify for Gift Aid, while gifts of assets can offer income tax and capital gains tax benefits. Gifts left to a DAF in your will are generally exempt from inheritance tax.

Reduced administration

The DAF provider manages the administration, governance, compliance checks, and reporting, making charitable giving straightforward and efficient.

Privacy and Anonymity

If you prefer to keep your charitable giving private, grants can often be made anonymously through your DAF.

Create a Lasting Legacy

A DAF can form part of your estate planning, helping you support the causes you care about for generations to come.
