Voting in the local elections

Published on 21 March 2018 12:00 PM

The next Local Government Elections will be held on Thursday 3 May 2018. We want to ensure that older people in the borough of Sutton are fully supported to exercise their voting rights and take part in democracy.

We’ve created this quick guide for people to use and share with others to provide key information on registering, how to vote, and key dates for the upcoming elections. vote icon

Registering to vote

You cannot vote unless you register.  If you have already registered, you don’t need to register again, unless you’ve changed your address, name or nationality since the last time you voted in a local or national election.

It only takes a few minutes to register to vote. It can easily be done online or by post. You might have also received a letter from the council with information about registering to vote.

How to vote

You can vote in person at a polling station, by post or by proxy (getting someone else to vote for you in certain circumstances).

When you register to vote, you can also choose how to vote. The council also sends a poll card to all qualified electors before each election, with information on when, where and how to vote. It also gives you enough time to change your details, including how you want to vote.

Dates to note

  • The deadline to register for the upcoming Local Government Elections is Tuesday 17 April
  • The deadline for receiving new postal vote and postal proxy applications, and for changes to existing postal or proxy votes is Wednesday 18 April
  • The deadline for receiving new applications to vote by proxy (not postal proxy or emergency proxies) is Wednesday 25 April
  • Polling Day is Thursday 3 May, 7.00 AM to 10.00 PM
