Whether you enjoy a gentle urban stroll or a walk on the wild side, Bristol Walk Fest is offering a programme of over 200 walks and events during the month of May. Most of the events are free and accessible to all ages, interests and fitness levels. From theatre and history walks in Clifton to an ancient woodland walking tour in Leigh Woods, there is a walk for everyone.
This month-long celebration of walking covers a rich selection of themes – including art, environment, nature, history, architecture, wellbeing, walking as a sport and wildlife. The varied programme means that you can find a walk to suit you in and around Bristol – many of which are free, and some for a small fee.
If you’re a history buff, why not try the tour around Bristol’s harbourside to discover its hidden history, and the Bristol Blitz Experience and air raid shelter tour which offers a unique subterranean walking tour, where you will see Blitz damage above street level before going underground to explore an air raid shelter. Other walks explore specific events in Bristol’s history such as the 1831 riots and the city’s rich history of smuggling, pirates and privateers.
Sport and fitness lovers can try Nordic walking, Walking rugby and Walking tennis. If you wish to spend some time enjoying nature, you can choose from a wide variety of rambles – such as bluebell walks in Failand and Tortworth Forest Centre, a dawn chorus walk in Stoke Park and several foraging walks in local parks and other wild spaces.
Walking and wellbeing is an important theme throughout the Walk Fest programme and all the walks provide a great opportunity to meet new people – for example, why not try the Stroll and Chat in Bedminster or the Walk and Talk for Unpaid Carers?
Each walk is graded into Easy, Fairy Easy, Moderate or Challenging – and key information is provided on accessibility by public transport and how accessible the walk is for wheelchairs and mobility scooters.
