Meet Geraldine - Telephone Befriending Volunteer

Brief Background

Geraldine worked in a financial institution for most of her life.
After she retired, she spent time initially supporting her elderly parents but always thought about volunteering.
Although, she is an existing volunteer at a local primary school, she contacted us in December 2022 about volunteering for the telephone befriending scheme and now she is a weekly volunteer.

How long have you volunteered for?

Since January 2023.

Why did you choose Volunteering for Age UK Hertfordshire?

I chose Age UK Hertfordshire because of the help that I had received from Age UK for my mum. I had used the helpline for advice, spoken to people there who sent me relevant fact sheets and information after our call which was very helpful.
I thought it was a terrific charity to volunteer for & the service is essential for older people.

What’s the best thing about being a volunteer?

It’s lovely to build up a relationship with somebody you’ve not met in person & to provide companionship over the phone.
It’s great to give something back to them and I really enjoy doing it – it’s a two way thing.
My client really enjoys our phone calls as we have many common interests – sometimes we chat for over 45 minutes. I love it.
