Meet Isabelle – Befriending Volunteer

Brief Background

Isabelle is originally from France but moved to England when she met her husband.
She was introduced to her local church where she volunteers as part of the Pastoral Care team, but also used to help in the café provided for the homeless.
During lockdown, she also got involved with meals on wheels and really enjoyed seeing clients (especially those who were lonely & vulnerable), so she knew volunteering was for her.

How long have you volunteered for?

15 years.

Why did you choose Volunteering for Age UK Hertfordshire?

When I met the lady from the church, I realised I liked the company of older people and decided that I wanted to volunteer with older people.
I heard about Age UK Hertfordshire and got in touch.
I met up with the coordinator, we talked about the Befriending visiting scheme and that’s how I started.

What’s the best thing about being a volunteer?

You know you are doing good when you see that people smile back. It’s a two way thing – we both get something from it.
You bring them something but they bring something back to you.
It makes me smile when they say “I look forward to seeing you”.
