Location:   Lancashire

Hours: June 2026 to May 2027 (or any period in between those dates), depending on your availability. Days and times are flexible, apart from two days’ training in oral history.

We do not expect a minimum time commitment for any volunteer.

About the role

This is a new and exciting project to celebrate the 85th Anniversary of Age UK Lancashire! We’re planning to record oral histories of older people, create a digital archive, make a film, bury a time capsule, hold a celebration event, and stage an exhibition between now and May 2027. Our Anniversary is on 11th December 2026.

This role is perfect for someone who:

  • Enjoys talking with people and putting them at ease.
  • Is a good listener and treats people’s stories with care and respect.
  • Has an interest in history, heritage, storytelling or community projects.
  • Is organised and able to follow guidance around consent and confidentiality.
  • Is happy to work independently but also as part of a supportive team.

What you will be doing:

  • After completing training, visit older people at home and in the community to listen to and record their stories.
  • Carry out research at Lancashire Archives.
  • Inform the development of a digital archive.
  • Work with Lancashire Archives to design, develop, and install an exhibition.
  • Support the Celebration Event in December.

Volunteers do not have to do all the things listed – for example, some may only record the oral histories, some may carry out research, others may focus on the exhibition, and some may choose to do everything.

Full training and out-of-pocket expenses will be provided.

This role is subject to a standard Disclosure and Barring check.
