Stay steady, stay safe: supporting Falls Prevention Awareness Week
Published on 23 September 2026 07:41 PM
Falls Prevention Awareness Week takes place from 21–25 September, and Age UK Norfolk is supporting the NHS Norfolk and Suffolk Integrated Care Board’s Stay Steady and Safe campaign.
Falls can have a significant impact on confidence, independence and wellbeing, but there are simple things we can all do to help reduce the risk.
The Stay Steady and Safe campaign highlights six simple steps:

- Keep active and social – activities that improve strength, balance and mobility can help you stay steady on your feet.
- Look after your sight and hearing – attend regular checks and make sure you have the support you need.
- Check your medicines – speak to a healthcare professional if you have concerns about your medication or experience dizziness.
- Make your home safer – clear trip hazards, improve lighting and take care around stairs and other potential hazards.
- Wear supportive footwear – well-fitting shoes can help you feel more secure when moving around.
- Take extra care if you feel dizzy or unsteady – don't ignore changes in your balance and speak to a healthcare professional if you're concerned.
You can find the full Six Simple Steps to Stay Steady and Safe guidance on the Norfolk and Suffolk Integrated Care Board website. The ICB says that strength and balance activities are one of the most effective ways to reduce the risk of falls.
Helping people stay strong, active and independent
This is also at the heart of Age UK Norfolk's new Communities in Motion programme, which is launching in the Great Yarmouth area.
The free 12-week sessions are designed to help people aged 65+ improve their strength, balance, mobility and confidence, while also providing an opportunity to meet other people and build social connections.
The sessions are friendly, welcoming and designed to support people to stay happy, healthy and independent for longer. You don't have to be particularly active to take part – the sessions can be adapted to different abilities.
