MCST

Published on 11 July 2022 11:00 PM

Maintenance Cognitive Stimulation Therapy (MCST) has been designed to help retain cognitive function for those with mild cognitive decline to moderate dementia through a structured process of various games and activities.

Just a few examples of the exercises include; music, games, reminiscence activities, physical activities, discussions, creative activities, quizzes and word games.

Sessions can last between 1-2 hours in groups, unlike other programmes, the Age UK MCST course is more long-term as it lasts 24 weeks. This helps build and maintain cognition, independence, and wellbeing.

Dr.Aimee Spector, a clinical psychologist at UCL, stated in an interview with Age UK that:

Research shows MCST clients continued to retain cognitive skills for a period of 6 months and that there was a statistical difference between the quality of life in MCST clients compared to the studies control group which was receiving no treatment.
