Pension Credit is a means-tested benefit for older people based on your income and savings which tops-ups your income if you don’t get a full State Pension.

Is it worth making a claim for Pension Credit?

If you make a claim within the next 9 days you could be eligible for the latest cost-ot-living payment, worth £301, as Pension Credit can be backdated for up to three months.   There are plans to make further cost-of-living payments later in the year.     Cost of Living Payments 2023 to 2024 - GOV.UK (www.gov.uk)

In addition, depending on your circumstances Pension Credit passports you to other benefits such as:

  • Free NHS dental treatment.
  • Help towards the cost of glasses.
  • Help towards the cost of transport to hospital.
  • Cold Weather Payments when the average temperature is 0°C or below for 7 days in a row between 1st November and 31st
  • Housing benefit if you are a tenant.
  • Possible help with housing costs if you are a homeowner.
  • Possible Carer Addition if you look after someone.
  • Possible Severe Disability Premium if you have a disability.
  • Possible Child Addition if you are responsible for a child.
  • Free TV licence if you are aged 75 and over.

It’s easy to make a claim for Pension Credit

You can make a claim over the phone by calling the Pension Credit claim line on 0800 99 1234.

You will need to have the following information ready:

  • Your National Insurance number,
  • Your bank account details,
  • Information about your income, savings and any investments,
  • Information about your pension (if you have one),
  • Details of any housing costs (such as service charges or ground rent)
  • Your partner’s details if you have one.
