What does the Health Check involve?

The NHS Health Check is straightforward and usually takes around 20 to 30 minutes. During your appointment, a trained member of staff will:

  • Measure your blood pressure
  • Check your cholesterol levels
  • Record your height, weight and waist measurement
  • Ask questions about your lifestyle, such as diet, physical activity, smoking and alcohol use
  • Assess your risk of developing conditions such as heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, kidney disease and dementia

What happens after the check?

Once your results are available, they will be explained clearly and confidentially. You'll receive:

  • An overview of your personal health results
  • Advice on how to improve or maintain your health
  • Practical support and signposting to local services, activities or your GP if needed

If any concerns are identified, you'll be supported to take the next steps. Often small changes can make a big difference.

Why have an NHS Health Check?

Many long-term health conditions develop gradually and don't cause symptoms at first. The NHS Health Check helps identify risks early, giving you the chance to take action before problems develop.
