A community coffee morning at The Saddlers pub in Shrewsbury raised an impressive £200 to support older people across the local area.
The fundraising event in aid of Age UK Shropshire Telford & Wrekin took place on Thursday 20 August and brought local residents together to enjoy coffee, cake and good company, while raising money for a great cause.
The Saddlers hosts a monthly coffee morning in support of a different local charity or community group, and this month’s event was dedicated to supporting local older people. Organised by local residents and charity supporters alongside Margaret Philips, landlady of The Saddlers, the morning provided a warm and welcoming space for people to socialise, meet friends and make new connections.
Visitors were treated to refreshments, with delicious cakes and snacks generously provided by the Food Hub. A small bring & buy sale also helped boost the fundraising total. The Repair Café joined the event too, selling their wares and generously donating the profits to Age UK Shropshire Telford & Wrekin.
Emma Wilde, Interim Head of Wellbeing & Friendship Services at Age UK Shropshire Telford & Wrekin, attended the coffee morning and was available to answer questions about the charity and the wide range of services it provides to older people across the county.
Emma said: “We would like to thank Margaret at The Saddlers, for hosting the event and providing refreshments. Thanks also to the Food Hub for providing cakes and snacks, and The Repair Café for joining us to sell their wares and donating the profits to us.
“We are also grateful to everyone from the local community who came along to help support older people in Shropshire. Coffee, cake, community and kindness; it was wonderful to see everyone come together.”
Every penny raised will help Age UK Shropshire Telford & Wrekin continue supporting older people to remain independent, stay connected to their communities and access practical information, advice and support when they need it most. The £200 raised is a fantastic example of the difference that can be made when local people come together to support older people in their community.
As the coffee morning was such a success, a similar event is planned for Thursday 29 October and everyone is welcome to attend.
