Free Wills Month

Published on 20 October 2026 10:48 AM

This Free Wills Month, Age UK Surrey is encouraging people across the county to write or update their Will, and to consider the difference a gift can make to older people for years to come.

Free Wills Month takes place every March and October and serves as a gentle reminder that an up-to-date Will is one of the best ways to make sure your wishes are followed and the people you love are looked after.

For many people, it is also a moment to think about the causes that matter to them. After providing for family and loved ones, a growing number choose to leave a gift to a charity that reflects their values. Across the UK, gifts in Wills generated a record £4.5 billion for charities in 2024, with more than 145,000 charitable bequests, according to the Legacy Giving Report 2025.

Here in Surrey, the impact is just as striking. Thanks to people who have generously remembered the charity in their Will, 37% of Age UK Surrey’s work is made possible by legacy gifts. Those gifts help fund services that tackle loneliness and isolation, provide trusted information and advice, support people living with dementia, and help older people maintain their independence.

Free Wills Month coincides with Age UK Surrey’s legacy campaign, Your Gift That Grows for Generations. Its message is simple: a gift in your Will is a seed planted today that grows into a lasting legacy, a sheltering canopy for older people across Surrey who need warmth, companionship and care.

Catherine Hodgson, CEO of Age UK Surrey, said: “A gift in your Will is one of the most meaningful ways to make a lasting difference. After providing for family and loved ones, many people choose to support a cause that reflects their values and has made a positive impact in their community.

“We understand that leaving a legacy is a deeply personal decision. That’s why we are committed to ensuring that every gift is managed with care, transparency and respect. Every gift, no matter its size, helps us continue supporting older people across Surrey both now and in the future.”

Even a small gift can make a significant difference, helping Age UK Surrey continue to provide vital support and companionship to older people throughout the county.
