Local Age UK urges families to be dementia aware this festive season

Age UK West Sussex, Brighton & Hove (WSBH) is urging families to be dementia aware this festive season, so any early signs of dementia in older relatives can be identified and acted on. Early diagnosis and treatment of the condition can sometimes slow its progression, so the sooner action is taken, the better.
Currently, approximately 1 in 3 people with dementia are undiagnosed. People are often aware of the classic signs of dementia, such as memory loss, but may not be aware of other symptoms that are common. These include personality changes or acting inappropriately, struggling to find the right words, having difficulty keeping track of times and dates, finding day-to-day tasks like shopping difficult, or losing interest in things they previously enjoyed.
Charlie Rayner, Head of Dementia and Extra Care at Age UK WSBH said “We’re trying to raise awareness of dementia and its symptoms ahead of the Christmas period, so people can look out for family and friends who may be affected. Getting an early diagnosis and expert support is hugely beneficial as there are activities that can make life easier, but also tackle the condition head on, sometimes slowing its progression. We also want people to know that we’re here to help. If you’re worried about memory loss or dementia - you don’t have to face it alone.”
In terms of a diagnosis, the team at Age UK WSBH can help explain the process, potential timescales and the options available. Age UK WSBBH provides paid-for dementia assessments in its own clinic, or can help guide people through what to expect if they are using the NHS route.
The Dementia Clinic run by Age UK WSBH is a paid-for service within the charity, but only aims to cover its costs, rather than make a profit. It’s designed to provide a high-quality assessment and will help people be seen promptly by experts, at the lowest possible price. Developed in partnership with Here, a not-for-profit social enterprise, the service provides clinical diagnosis from Here, while Age UK WSBH provides personalised, compassionate one-to-one support throughout.
The charity can also share information about ‘Daybreak’ - local activity groups which aim to promote confidence and social interaction, as well as offering respite for carers. People can meet others in the same boat and take on activities to slow the progression of dementia, working on things like motor skills, memory and movement. The service runs in Bognor Regis, Rustington, Storrington, Horsham, Haywards Heath, Crawley, Burgess Hill and Brighton & Hove.
