Spring into action to support older relatives this month

Published on 16 March 2026 04:04 PM

Age UK West Sussex, Brighton & Hove (WSBH) is urging families to help older relatives organise their homes and gardens this spring, to ensure they can continue to live safely and independently at home. Keeping on top of chores and clearing clutter can become more difficult for older people, so offering a bit of help, or getting some help in, can make all the difference.

The charity can offer help with spring cleaning, tasks such as shopping and gardening and advice on adaptations like grab rails and walking aids. As the ‘go-to’ experts on later life, Age UK WSBH can also offer everyday support, like weekly cleaning and bed changing, plus options to tackle loneliness and offer companionship and connection.

The charity’s home visiting service can offer reassurance to relatives who live a long way from family, knowing that their loved one has a reliable, regular visitor to check in, chat and ensure all is well. Everyone working in these services is DBS checked and undertakes safeguarding and other relevant training.

Stephanie Matthews, Head of Independent Living at Age UK WSBH, said: “We’re asking people to check in on older relatives this month, just to ensure they are managing OK at home. Some people struggle to keep on top of cleaning or everyday chores as they age, or clutter can build up at home causing fire risks or trip hazards.

“For families who live far away from each other, we’ve got a range of independent living services which can help. Not only can we take on some of the day-to-day tasks that need doing, we also offer companionship to tackle loneliness and isolation. People often tell us our services help them to continue living independently at home, where they’re happiest. We love that we’re able to have such a positive impact and we really want to spread the word that help is available.”

Charges for Independent Living services vary, but only cover charity costs, rather than making a profit. It’s common for family members to arrange these services for ageing parents or relatives. Availability varies by area, but Brighton & Littlehampton currently have spaces for an immediate start.

If you or someone you know could benefit from Independent Living services, please call Age UK WSBH to find out more on 0800 019 1310, email info@ageukwsbh.org.uk or drop into the Age UK WSBH hub at 95 Queens Road, Brighton, BN1 3XE (open 9.30am – 4pm weekdays). Anyone on a low income and struggling with finances is still encouraged to get in touch as the charity may be able to offer a benefits check, signposting or other support free of charge.
