On referral initial contact will be made by one of our team and a home visit and assessment of needs can be carried out.

If needed we supply a short period of input in the home called ‘Light Touch’ consisting of up to 4 visits to offer support, advice, signposting on to relevant organisations and referring to other services within Age UK Lancashire.

During this time, referral into our CST programme will be considered if appropriate and if you are aged 50+ living with dementia.

Cognitive Stimulation Therapy – Group Sessions

What is Cognitive Stimulation Therapy (CST)?
Our Cognitive Stimulation Therapy aims to improve memory skills and thinking, independence and wellbeing for individuals living with mild to moderate dementia and the sessions are the only non-drug treatment recommended by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE).

What happens in a CST session?
Each Cognitive Stimulation Therapy group includes up to a maximum of 8 people, who remain together for the 12-week duration of the programme. This allows people to get to know those in their group, and form friendships with each other.

Each weekly session will last 2 hours and includes a planned program of activities that help stimulate thinking, memory and connection to others, including creative, musical, physical activities, topical discussions and word/number games.

Each client will be given a suitability assessment prior to the course starting to ensure they will get the full benefit from attending.

What are the benefits of CST?
- Improves the memory and thinking skills of most participants with mild to moderate dementia
- Participants who took part in CST have said there was an improvement in their daily quality of life
- Helps participants and their carers cope and live well with dementia
- Enables people to share their thoughts and feelings in a peer supportive environment
- Provides respite for carers

Carers are also encouraged to attend the group as we find the sessions provide a positive level of peer support for them.
