Slip into Slippers 2020

Published on 29 September 2020 12:13 PM

Love dressing up for Halloween but prefer staying comfy and cosy?

Why not cosy up in your fanciest (or spookiest!) slippers for the day on 30th October at school, work or even your scheduled Zoom meetings for a big team #SlipperSelfie and raise funds for Age UK Norfolk - just in time to help us befriend older people this Winter?!

Slip into Slippers is a simple way of pledging support to help us tackle loneliness for older people in Norfolk this winter. For every £12 raised, we’ll be able to provide an older person with a whole month of telephone befriending over the winter period, that’s around 400 hours of befriending for our members!

Slip into Slippers is a ‘dress down day’ that encourages people to donate £1 to Age UK Norfolk as an incentive to stay warm, cosy and relaxed in your fanciest slippers at work or school (wherever it’s safe to do so!)*

How to get involved?

Simply dress up in your slippers on the 30th October (the spookier/wackier the slippers the better!) and donate £1 to Age UK Norfolk via our JustGiving fundraiser.

At the bottom of this page, you’ll find some handy posters to help you, one to promote your dress down day and one to use on the day.

We’d love to be kept in the loop with your ‘Slip into Slippers’ day, so please send any photos to fundraising@ageuknorfolk.org.uk or tag us on social media: @ageuknorfolk / @ageuknorfolkofficial on Instagram.

Support for our befriending service this winter

All funds raised from our Slip into Slippers campaign will benefit our telephone befriending service, which makes friendly, chatty phone calls to lonely older people who may have no one else to talk to.

For every £10 raised, we’ll be able to provide an older person with a whole month of telephone befriending over the winter period, that’s around 400 hours of befriending for our members!

Do you know somebody who could benefit from receiving befriending calls? Visit our dedicated Telephone Befriending page to find out more.

Stella’s Story

Stella*, aged  88 has been a member of Age UK Norfolk’s telephone befriending service since 2018 and has been chatting to her befriending volunteer, Amy, for over two years now.

Stella, who was born and bred in Norfolk, is an only child (the same as her volunteer Amy) and her two sons live far away - one on the other side of the country and one on the other side of the world!

Stella used to love cross stitch and gardening but struggles with these things now and during the initial covid-19 lockdown, she really missed her visits out to the shops due to shielding.

Stella says, “Amy and I get on so well, it’s like I’ve known her many years. She is ever so friendly and chatty.

Some days I don’t talk to a soul and when Amy calls I feel so much better.”

Why raise funds for Age UK Norfolk?

There are estimated to be 38,000 lonely older people in Norfolk and in the wake of the covid-19 pandemic, many older people have experienced isolation and loneliness. With your support, we can do our bit to help ease the burden of loneliness this winter right here in our own communities, especially in anticipation of any further lockdown/shielding activity.

Local causes can often be over-looked in favour of bigger, national charities. When you support Age UK Norfolk, your fundraising efforts benefit older people right here in Norfolk – that could be your own parents, grandparents or even your next door neighbour!
