Community Art Project Inspires Change and Connection at Age UK Norwich

Published on 24 April 2026 09:34 AM

Older people across Norwich have been exploring creativity, community, and climate awareness through a powerful year-long art project led in partnership with SYSTA (Sharing Your Story Through Art).

Emma from SYSTA hosted bi-weekly workshops for Age UK Norwich clients, supported by Katy Omer (community outreach officer, Age UK Norwich) and a dedicated team of volunteers. Together, they explored “artivism” - a blend of art and activism - using creative expression to share personal stories, hopes, and concerns for a better future.

The workshops brought people together not only to learn new artistic skills, but also to engage with important topics such as climate change, biodiversity, and sustainability. For many participants, the sessions became a vital source of connection and confidence.

In April 2026, the project culminated in a public exhibition showcasing the artwork created throughout the year. Held over three days, the exhibition welcomed around 200 visitors, many of whom described feeling deeply moved and inspired by the pieces on display.

Katy reflected on the impact of the project:

“This has been an amazing opportunity for our members, learning the science behind climate change and using art to raise awareness for themselves, their children and grandchildren. I am thrilled it has helped combat social isolation, with so many of them growing in confidence and coming to all 24 workshops over the year. A beautiful community has sprung from strangers.”

The project also helped participants find a voice for their love of nature and their concerns about environmental challenges. By focusing on local actions and shared experiences, the group explored how individuals and communities can contribute to a more sustainable and resilient future.

For those interested in learning more, a book documenting the project captures the creativity and stories developed over the year, offering a lasting insight into this inspiring initiative.

This collaboration highlights the power of creativity to bring people together, spark important conversations, and create meaningful change - at any age.
