Loneliness in Plymouth and later life
Loneliness is a significant issue affecting older people both locally and across the UK. National research shows that a large proportion of people aged 65 and over experience loneliness at least some of the time, with some reporting persistent feelings of isolation.
Across the UK, millions of older adults are affected by social isolation, which can have a serious impact on both mental and physical health. These effects can include increased risk of depression, reduced wellbeing and poorer overall health outcomes.
While exact figures for Plymouth vary, our Befriending service is essential in helping to reduce isolation and improve quality of life for older residents.
