A good old natter over a cup of tea and a biscuit can often make the world of difference in the lives of older people who would perhaps otherwise feel lonely and isolated.

And it’s the great satisfaction, and also the fun, that volunteers experience in providing this invaluable companionship that comes across in Age UK Shropshire Telford & Wrekin's heartwarming new video.

The impactful one-and-a-half-minute film also shines a light on just how much older people enjoy these visits from the charity’s dedicated volunteers.

‘Oh, I look forward to him coming,’ says Sheila. ‘I give him a cup of tea and a chocolate biscuit; It’s companionship. It’s seeing someone of a different generation and having a really nice chat.’

Sheila’s volunteer befriender is Dean Suter who speaks of the joy of volunteering. ‘It all began when I saw this advert showing an elderly lady staring out of her living room window with no-one to talk to and it broke my heart. I felt I had to get involved somehow. And I have to say, I’ve never regretted getting involved. I thoroughly enjoy it, it’s fun and it’s just so incredibly worthwhile.’

Although the video focuses specifically on volunteer befrienders and telephone buddies, volunteering for Age UK Shropshire Telford & Wrekin comes in many forms and offers a wide variety of opportunities: from helping to run a day centre group or dementia support group to organising fund-raising events to helping people claim entitlements, and a whole host of other roles.
