Charity Pickleball Event

Age UK Surrey hosted its first charity pickleball event at Hurlands Pickleball and Padel Club in Farnham on Friday, 5 June. The event was attended by 25 people who came along to try the rapidly growing sport, taking part in a series of skills sessions and round-robin matches led by Richard, Hurlands' Head of Pickleball.
There was plenty of laughter and enjoyment as participants got used to their paddles and the light feel of the wiffle-style ball, which is very different from a tennis ball. Everyone practised "dinks" – a series of rallies played back and forth across the net – and quickly developed their skills throughout the day.
After the court sessions, the group enjoyed a delicious lunch of sandwiches in the mezzanine overlooking the courts. A raffle featuring pickleball-themed prizes and Hurlands merchandise added to the fun, and awards were presented by the Hurlands instructor for Best Rally, Best Shot and Most Valuable Player (MVP).
The Charity Pickleball Day was organised as part of Age UK Surrey's "Age Better TOGETHER in Surrey" campaign, which encourages people to take positive steps today to help them age better in the future. Events like this not only help the charity raise vital funds but also promote the importance of looking after our physical, mental and social wellbeing. Many of us are carers for older parents or loved ones, so staying active and trying new activities such as Pickleball can benefit not only our physical health but also our social connections and brain health.
Age UK Surrey would like to thank everyone who attended the event and for their generous donations. A special thank you goes to Tori, our Fundraising Campaign Coordinator, for organising the day.
We would also like to thank Hurlands for its excellent coaching sessions and wonderful catering. Finally, a special thank you to our sponsors, Taylor Wimpey, whose support helped make this event possible and brought the community together in support of older people across Surrey.
