Go100 Walk Programme marks Sir David Attenborough’s 100th birthday with a guided nature walk.

On 8th May, Age UK Surrey and RSPB volunteers and staff welcomed 34 walkers from the local community at Newlands Corner, Surrey, along with Go50’s regular walking group, for a special centenary celebrating Sir David Attenborough’s 100th Birthday, raising around £200 in donations, which were split with the RSPB.

The event ran smoothly and on time, with two guided groups of walkers, each enjoying dry weather, expansive views, and plentiful birdlife and birdsong along the route. RSPB guides Tony and Malcolm joined the 2-hour walk, sharing insights on local birdlife, and when the walkers weren’t listening to birdsong, they sang “Happy Birthday” to Sir David Attenborough. There were birthday cupcakes to celebrate, too!

This was the first time that Age UK Surrey's Go50 walkers teamed up the RSPB Guildford branch, bringing communities together with a shared interest in nature and walking. Go50 members who hadn't walked in years came out for this special walk and were joined by members of the public to celebrate the occasion and learn more about our work.

This walk also highlights our current campaign, Age Better TOGETHER in Surrey, which encourages people to take positive steps today to help us age better in the future, such as getting out for walks and connecting with their community.

It was a fantastic day – well organised, welcoming and a real celebration of nature. We’re grateful to everyone who joined us, donated, and helped make the walk operate so smoothly,” said Debra DaviesVolunteer & Wellbeing Manager at Age UK Surrey.

Age UK Surrey thanked its volunteer team and partners for their support, including Fundraising Campaign Co-ordinator Tori, walk leaders Eryl, Steve and Rosemary, desk volunteer Tom, volunteer photographer Liz, and RSPB guides Tony and Malcolm.
